The Ohio Association for Food Protection held its Summer Conference at Anheuser-Busch in Columbus, Ohio. The meeting included educational presentations, networking with colleagues, and concluded with a tour of the Anheuser-Busch Manufacturing Facility.
Yuqi Luo, our Second Vice President held a roundtable discussion on inspiring food safety mindset in the new challenge eras. We with the audience discussed on the emerging issues on post-covid supply chain, evolving new technology in household kitchen and how social media impact our consumption behavior. Each topic was well received with the fruitful debates from participants, background from manufacturers, food service to public health.
Abby Kuofie, a Senior Manager for Quality Assurance at Anheuser Busch discussed the details of processing products. A review of their HACCP system to ensure top quality products with the desired taste profile outcome.

2018 Winter Meeting
The Ohio Association for Food Protection held its Winter Conference and Annual Business Meeting on January 10th at the Franklin County Public Health in Columbus, Ohio. The day included educational presentations, networking with colleagues, and there were poster sessions that included posters from several students at the Ohio State University. In the middle of the day we also held our Annual Business Meeting and handed out awards. Awards given included Sanitarian of the Year Award to Carrie Kamm, Educator of the Year Award to Mike Tedrick, and Student of the Year Award to Holly Paden, from Ohio State University.

The Ohio Association for Food Protection held its Winter Conference and Annual Business Meeting on January 26th at the Columbus Public Health in Columbus, Ohio. The day included educational presentations, networking with colleagues, and for the first time there was a poster session that included posters from several students at the Ohio State University. In the middle of the day we also held our Annual Business Meeting and handed out awards. Awards given included Sanitarian of the Year Award to Joette Moore, Lifetime Membership Award to Miranda Warner, Company of the Year Award to Nature's One, Industry Professional of the Year to Whitney Baker, and Past President Award to Odelia Nedefru-Tumanjong.

2013 Summer Meeting
The Ohio Association for Food Protection held its Summer Meeting on July 18, 2013, in Urbana, OH. As usual we had a mix of regulatory, research, private industry, and academic participants, and everyone enjoyed the meeting, as well as a chance to see old friends and meet new ones.
Our speakers covered a variety of topics:
• "Internships at Columbus Public Health", Keith L. Krinn, RS, MA, Public Health Administrator, Environmental Health Division, Columbus Public Health
• "The survivability of Norovirus on tableware items after regularly used dish washing protocols", Melvin Pascall, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of Food Science and Technology, The Ohio State University
• "An Outbreak of E. coli 0157; Germantown, Ohio 2012", Alan Pierce, MPH, RS, Supervisor, Bureau of General Services, Public Health Dayton and Montgomery County
• "Regulations of fish waters and hatcheries that impact seafood for human consumption safety", Rich Carter, Fish Administrator, Ohio Division of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife
We were fortunate to have the opportunity to conclude our day with a tour of Freshwater Farms, a local fresh fish hatchery, grow out, processing, marketing, and retail operation of farm-raised fish and prawns (freshwater shrimp). Freshwater Farms is the only producer of trout products in Ohio. Their five-acre farm is the state’s largest indoor fish hatchery, and they raise up to 100,000 pounds of fish yearly both indoors and outdoors year round.
OAFP’s Board wishes to extend our thanks and gratitude to all the speakers and Freshwater Farms for their contributions to another successful meeting! Plans are underway for our Winter Meeting, and we welcome everyone to join us.
2013 Winter Meeting
The Ohio Association for Food Protection held its Winter Conference and Annual Business Meeting on January 30th at the Ohio Department of Agriculture in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. The day included educational presentations, networking with colleagues, and concluded with the Annual Business Meeting.
We were delighted to welcome Dr. Alejandro Mazzotta, Senior Director of Global Food Safety at Campbell’s Soup Company and IAFP Secretary. After Dr. Mazzotta’s brief introduction to the benefits of becoming an IAFP member (there are many!), he presented “Thermal Processing of Foods: Commercial Sterilization;” an interesting point-of-view of the canning process including food safety, risk, different types of canning, and how they work. In a second presentation, “Microbial Food Safety – Process Validation,” Dr. Mazzotta described the implementation of practices and policies that will assist in validating food product safety.
We also welcomed Guy W. Cartwright, FDA, who updated attendees on the Food Safety Modernization Act and how these new policies will benefit the public.
The final speaker, Tim Tewksbary, Ohio Department of Agriculture, presented on the addition of cut leafy greens to the definition of TCS Foods in the Ohio Uniform Food Safety Code, and the changes licensed facilities will need to take to comply with this new rule.
This year, OAFP is excited to introduce three new awards that will be given yearly. These awards and this year’s recipients are: “Outstanding Food Safety Accomplishments by a Company in the Food Industry” given to John Morrell Food Group; “Outstanding Service to the Public in the Field of Food Safety” given to Christina Ritchey-Wilson; and, “Devotion to the Ideals and Objectives of the International Association for Food Protection and the Ohio Association for Food Protection” given to Connie Freese.
Special recognition must be given to Gloria Swick-Brown, who, after an incredible 22 years of serving as Delegate for OAFP, she decided it was time to start enjoying retirement! We thank her for the many years of dedication and wish her all the best!
